Richard F. Burton was a nineteenth-century British explorer, linguist, and author. He is best known for his travels to the Middle East, Africa, and India, where he studied languages and cultures. Burton was a polyglot who spoke over 25 languages, and he was the first European to visit many regions of Africa and Arabia.
