Medieval and early modern Irish scholars thought of themselves as Europeans. As an expression of territorial association, this belief reflects both their familiarity with the geographical traditions of Antiquity and the integration of their society into economic, cultural, and political networks that spanned the continent. But it was also an articulation of a perceived cultural affinity often denied in modern scholarship. Brendan Kane is Professor of History at the University of Connecticut. In addition to publishing research on early modern Ireland and England, he is a founding co-director of the digital humanities project Léamh.org: Learn Early Modern Irish (c. 1200-1650).
Patrick Wadden is Professor of History at Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. He works primarily on the history and learned culture of early medieval Ireland. He is co-editor of Origin Legends in Early Medieval Western Europe (Brill, 2022).
