Alcestis - Paperback

Alcestis is a Greek tragedy written by Euripides, which was first performed in Athens in 438 BC. The play tells the story of Admetus, the king of Thessaly, who has been granted the gift of avoiding death by Apollo, on the condition that someone else dies in his place. Admetus' wife, Alcestis, offers to sacrifice herself for her husband, and the play follows the aftermath of her death and her eventual return to life. The play explores themes of sacrifice, love, and the nature of death, and is considered one of Euripides' most powerful works. The play is written in verse and features a chorus, which comments on the action of the play and provides insight into the characters' motivations. Alcestis is a timeless classic of Greek tragedy, which continues to be performed and studied to this day.Translated Into English Rhyming Verse With Explanatory Notes By Gilbert Murray. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
