A History of the York Center Cooperative is about a cooperative community that was the first purposefully integrated suburban development in DuPage County outside of Chicago. The members of the YCCC teamed up with the NAACP and Thurgood Marshall to change FHA housing policy when they brought their situation to the attention of President Harry Truman. Later, a law suit against the community was decided in their favor at the Illinois Supreme Court and changed Illinois law.

Their epic struggle is a significant chapter in the history of DuPage County and the civil rights and housing struggles in the Chicago area.

It is also story about cooperation. The YCCC was a successful community built around cooperation by people of different races, religions and ethnic backgrounds. It is a story about how working together can lead to great accomplishments.

Shirky, M. R.: - Truman Kirkpatrick was the first historian of the York Center Co-op Community. His record of the early events of the York Center Co-op in his unpublished monograph made A History of the York Center Co-op possible. Significant unedited sections of his monograph are included in the book. Truman was born in 1913 in South Bend, IN to the son of a Methodist minister in. His family moved to Chicago where he grew up, attended Hyde Park High School and the University of Chicago as a chemistry major. During the Second World War Truman served in Alternative Service as a conscientious objector in Coshockton, OH, and at Duke University. During that time, he met and married Barbara Bowman.He was a Democratic activist, a tireless organizer and spokesperson for progressive issues. He did a great deal of work to revive the Democratic Party in DuPage County. His efforts earned him the label "the dean" of the modern DuPage Democratic Party by the Chicago Tribune.He founded the Lombard Democratic Club in the 1950s and The DuPage Democrat newsletter that was printed from his home. His club eventually merged with the official Democratic Party of DuPage County. Truman was also a perennial candidate, running for a number of local offices knowing there was little chance of winning and was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Miami Beach, Florida in 1972.Truman Kirkpatrick passed away at the age of 84 in 1997.
