A Gypsy Dreaming in Jerusalem: One Woman's Journey from Postcards to Purpose

When I was a child selling postcards to tourists, I never thought I would write a book. Being raised in the Gypsy culture was like a movie with sweet parts mixed with painful times. In my childlike thinking, I had no idea how that drama would continue or how it would end. Looking back to the change from that childhood to becoming Director of the Domari Center gave me an incentive to tell my story and show the world what it is like to be a Gypsy woman.

About This Memoir

This personal narrative by Amoun Sleem documents the lived experience of growing up Domari in Jerusalem. The book chronicles a transformation from childhood poverty to community leadership, offering readers an authentic perspective on a culture rarely represented in mainstream literature. Sleem's account moves between the challenges of her early years and her eventual role directing an organization dedicated to preserving Domari heritage.

What Readers Will Discover

The memoir provides insight into the daily realities of Gypsy culture in the Middle East, including the tension between tradition and modern life. Sleem writes about the specific experiences that shaped her path, from her work as a child vendor in Jerusalem's tourist areas to navigating cultural expectations as a woman pursuing education and leadership roles. The narrative addresses themes of cultural preservation, identity formation, and the complexities of representing a marginalized community.

Author Background

Amoun Sleem serves as Director of the Domari Center, an organization focused on cultural preservation and community support for Domari people. Her unique position as both an insider to the culture and a public advocate gives this memoir its particular value. The book represents one of the few published first-person accounts from a Domari woman, filling a significant gap in biographical literature about Middle Eastern minority communities.
