The game of Go is, occasionally, referred to as a sitting martial art. This series of books is dedicated to kyū ranked players and uses the following colors to represent belt colors often used in martial arts rating systems: white (beginner), yellow, orange, green, blue and then brown.

This volume, the white one, is where the learning begins. The color white symbolizes purity, clarity, and - especially in Asia - stands generally for the beginning. The player has just learned the rules and now takes their first steps on the board, most often on the small 9×9 board.
