100 Whites: Kenya Hara's Exploration of White in Design

The world of white, from Muji art director Kenya Hara

White not only plays an important role in Japanese cultures in general but also in the work of Kenya Hara, art director for Muji. In 100 Whites, Hara gives 100 examples of white, such as snow, Iceland, rice and wax. On the basis of these examples he discusses the importance of white in design--not only as a color but as a philosophy. Hara describes how he experiments with the different whites he instances, what they mean in the process of his work and how they influence design today. 100 Whites is the extension of Hara's previously published book White. The publication explores the essence of white, which Hara sees as symbolizing simplicity and subtlety.

Book Details

This hardcover edition from Lars Muller Publishers presents 100 distinct examples of white, each serving as a meditation on simplicity, subtlety, and the role of white in contemporary design. From natural phenomena like snow to cultural elements like rice, Hara examines how white functions beyond mere color to become a design philosophy. The book serves as both a visual exploration and theoretical examination of minimalism in Japanese design culture.

Published in June 2019, 100 Whites extends the concepts introduced in Hara's earlier work, offering designers, architects, and creative professionals deeper insight into the symbolic and practical applications of white in visual culture. This makes it an essential addition to any design library or coffee table collection.
