Alan Garrett comes home to California after a twenty-year career as an Air Force Special Investigator. He sets up shop in Manhattan Beach as a newly-licensed Private Eye.

He receives an invitation, and decides to attend his high school twenty-year reunion -- even though he remembers almost none of his fellow graduates.

"Might be a blast" he thinks -- renew old friendships, have a few laughs, exchange some war stories, might even be good for business, " I'll pass out some business cards . . . drum up some business."
