Carmen Karlaff, owner of a native grass and wildflower seed farm in northwestern Minnesota, is busy with spring farming operations, prairie cabin rentals, enjoying her relationship with her boyfriend Nick, and getting to know his half-sister Faye. When an emergency visit to the local dentist is required, she is shocked by the dentist's murder minutes after fixing Carmen's tooth. The death appears to be drug related and with no friends or family under suspicion, she is relieved there is no need for her to be involved. Her relief is short-lived when another dead body with ties to Faye is found in one of Carmen's burnt fields. When both Nick and Faye end up on the Sheriff's suspect list, Carmen is forced to investigate. In the process, Nick and Faye's past is revealed with surprising ties to Carmen's father. As she follows the clues to clear her loved ones, she finds herself in harm's way again.

Ratzlaff, Tara: - Tara Ratzlaff lives in the northwest corner of Minnesota (just about in Canada) with her husband of twenty-nine years, daughter, five fat cats, and one rescue dog who fiercely greets family, friends and strangers the same-as if she wants to eat them. Tara graduated from North Dakota State University with a degree in Civil Engineering and became the first female County Highway Engineer in the state of Minnesota. She retired early from her career as a Civil Engineer when she and her husband purchased a native grass and wildflower seed farm/business which they operated for over twenty years before recently retiring. With her daughter busy in college and the seed farm no longer keeping her busy, she decided it was time to pursue her dream of writing cozy mysteries. Her hobbies are reading (mysteries only, of course), long walks, swimming when the pool isn't frozen and being amused by the antics of her pets.
