About Mihkel Mutt
Born in Tartu, Estonia in 1953, Mihkel Mutt has established himself as one of Estonia's most significant literary voices. His extensive body of work includes critical essays, short stories, novels, travel essays, and plays. Mutt served as editor-in-chief of Estonia's leading cultural weekly Sirp (1997-2005) and the literary journal Looming (2005-2016).
His literary achievements include winning the Tuglas Short Story Award in 1981 and 2008, and the Cultural Endowment of Estonia's Award for Essays in 2001 and 2015. In 2016, Mutt received the distinction of being selected as one of five writers to receive an official state salary for their literary activities. The English translation of his work The Cavemen Chronicle (Dalkey Archive Press, 2015) was nominated for the Cultural Endowment of Estonia's Award for Translated Literature.
About the Translator
Adam Cullen (1986) specializes in translating Estonian prose, poetry, and plays into English. His translations include works by Tõnu Õnnepalu, Mihkel Mutt, Indrek Hargla, and Rein Raud. Two of his translations—Õnnepalu's Radio (Dalkey Archive Press, 2014) and Mutt's The Cavemen Chronicle (Dalkey Archive Press, 2015)—received nominations for the Cultural Endowment of Estonia's Annual Prize for Literary Translation.
