Jack London (1876-1916) was an American novelist, activist, and prominent figure in California's literary community. Often remembered as one of the early innovators of the science fiction genre, London had a prolific scope of work throughout his career. Known mostly for his novels, The Call of the Wild and White Fang, London also wrote many other short stories, all bearing close connections to the theme of finding truth in the outdoors. During his working years as a writer, London was a part of a literary group in San Francisco called, "The Crowd." There, he advocated loudly for labor and union rights. In addition to his outdoor-themed stories, London wrote many pieces revolving around his political motives such as The People of the Abyss, The Iron Heel and The War of the Classes.
