Henry Cowell's Complete Works for Violin and Piano features some of the avant-garde American composer's lesser known pieces. These works, written between 1924 and 1958, highlight his experiments with classical form and hymn and folk tune quotations rather than the "revolutionary effects" for which he is known. This album is a great companion to the composer's own performances of his music on Smithsonian Folkways' Piano Music.
