After a stint as a replacement for Little Anthony with the Imperials, Kerr became a member of the Serenaders, a New York based group. After an audition with Berry Gordy, he relocated for a brief time to Detroit where he honed his skills as a songwriter and producer. Pairing a singer with a song had always been one of George's great talents. A case in point would be Linda Jones and the song "Hypnotized" that became a huge hit in the mid-1960's or being the first producer to record a soul group (The Escorts) behind bars (all the members were in prison).
