The number in each gray square indicates the sum of the numbers in the squares to the right of it or below it, as per the direction of the arrow.

The white squares can contain any of the digits from 1-9, however, a digit can be used only once in any vertical column or horizontal line to make the target number. By using logic and patience, all puzzles are solvable without guessing. For your convenience, I have included a reference guide at the back of the book listing the most common number sequences.
