Generative Scribing: A Social Art of the 21st Century

Scribing--visually representing ideas while people talk--is a distinct social art form that facilitates group learning and cultural memory. Scribes listen and draw simultaneously, creating large pictures that integrate content, prompt insight, and aid with decision-making.

"Generative scribing" extends this art by attending to the field of energy and relation between people, and to the emerging potential of a system.

What You'll Learn

This book frames the key concepts that inform and cultivate a scribe's inner capacities of being, joining, perceiving, knowing, and drawing. Author Kelvy Bird draws from her experience as co-founder of the Presencing Institute and her work with MIT's edX course u.lab: Leading From the Emerging Future to provide practical frameworks for visual practitioners.

For Visual Practitioners and Facilitators

This guide serves visual practitioners, facilitators, coaches, and organizers who work with groups and organizations. Whether you practice graphic recording, lead workshops, or facilitate meetings, this book provides methods to enhance your visual communication skills and deepen your understanding of group dynamics.

Approach Your Work Differently

For anyone who cares about how we exist together as humans, this book offers tools to explore interior functioning and approach collaborative work anew. The techniques apply to organizational development, systems thinking, and any setting where visual learning enhances understanding and decision-making.
