Derri and Bill Smith wrote The Character Series, including Conversation with Character, while homeschooling two daughters. Derri's career before children was teaching elementary school. She then mentored inner-city children in habits of good character and godly living. Bill Smith began his career as a journalist and then frequently wrote for the varied purposes of business, government, industry and nonprofit. The Smiths spent six years in Europe and the UK, aiding refugees and helping in the post-communist recovery of Eastern Europe. Today, Derri is founder and Executive Director of End Slavery Tennessee, creating a slave-free Tennessee and holistically restoring survivors of human trafficking. Bill writes grant proposals full-time for his local food bank and is a senior editor for a publisher.
