Why should we spend time alone with God, fast, pray, and read the Bible? What is the goal? After all, there is no purpose for practicing discipline without a goal. An athlete spends time practicing his sport and exercising his body because he has a goal of performing on the field. A farmer wakes up early every morning to tend his field because he has the goal of a harvest. So, what is a Christian's goal in practicing the basic spiritual disciplines?
The answer is simple: Because we want to be godly.
This book is a short and concise introduction to the basic spiritual disciplines, and its aim is to help you make time with God a daily habit. It will not cover all the spiritual disciplines, only four that we will call the "basic spiritual disciplines." They are:

And the good news? You do not walk the road of godliness by yourself. If you are in Christ, then the presence of a Divine Person is living inside of you, comforting you, counseling you, guiding you, and directing you toward the goal of godliness.
