In a letter to his brother he explained his inspiration: 'I am almost certain that these canvases illustrate what I cannot express in words, that is, how healthy and reassuring I find the countryside.' While he was not widely accepted in his lifetime, Van Gogh is now one of the most renowned artists in the world and his incredible paintings will be for ever admired.
