A Challenging Peace: In the Life and Stories of Jesus

A Challenging Peace in the Life and Stories of Jesus offers a distinctive approach to Gospel study through the integration of visual art and theological reflection. This devotional book interprets 40 stories from the Gospels, each accompanied by original block print images created by author Cara B. Hochhalter.

What's Inside This Book

Each of the 40 Gospel stories includes three components: the Biblical text, an original block print illustration, and the author's personal reflections. These reflections connect the ancient narratives to contemporary challenges of peace-making and justice. The book bridges art, faith, and social consciousness, making it suitable for individual study, group discussion, or devotional practice.

Original Block Print Artwork

The block print images throughout the book are hand-created by the author, offering a visual interpretation of each Gospel story. The art-making process itself becomes a method of theological exploration, breaking into Biblical texts to reveal their relevance for modern readers. Each print adds a contemplative dimension to the accompanying scripture passage.

Who This Book Is For

This book serves readers who are curious about Jesus' teachings, seeking peace in their personal lives and communities, or interested in the intersection of art and spirituality. While rooted in Christian tradition, the author believes the stories contain universal truths that transcend denominational boundaries and can unite people in creating a more peaceful world.

Hochhalter is a retired United Church of Christ (UCC) minister with a Masters of Divinity from United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in Minnesota, where she studied the intersections of art, theology, and justice. She states, "I find that the process of creating images becomes a means to break into Biblical texts and themes that are meaningful in today's world."

Cara served as minister for a church in Charlemont, Massachusetts for ten years. She now resides in Hyde Park, New York with her husband, Jeffrey. She enjoys gardening with native plants, making watercolor/graphite art of wildflowers, and participating in peace efforts.
